Chapter 14 - THE CHILD IN MERCER’S HOUSE
Mercer was released while prosecutors reviewed the financial evidence.
The following morning, a seventeen-year-old girl named Lily Mercer arrived at Mara’s office.
She was Grant Mercer’s daughter.
“My father knows Alicia is cooperating,” Lily said. “He keeps saying witnesses disappear when they become inconvenient.”
Mara asked why she had come.
Lily placed a flash drive on the desk.
Mercer had required her to organize digital files during school vacations. She had copied them after hearing him threaten Alicia.
The drive contained property lists, medication records and photographs of elderly targets.
One folder was labeled HAYES PRESSURE.
Inside were surveillance photographs of Walter, Mara and Evan.
Another showed Denise Calder meeting Mercer months before Walter moved into Evan’s house.
Denise had not discovered Walter’s assets after becoming his caregiver.
Mercer had selected Walter first and arranged for Denise to create the crisis that placed him under her control.
Evan stared at the meeting photographs.
“She married me because of Dad?”
Lily shook her head.
“She was already married to you when my father found her. But he knew your company was failing. He knew she was angry. He gave her a way to turn both things into money.”
The final video showed Mercer talking to Denise in a restaurant parking lot.
“If the old man becomes difficult,” Mercer said, “make him look dangerous. Nobody believes an angry senior once the family says dementia.”
Walter watched the video twice.
Then he turned it off.
“They studied my age like it was a weakness.”
Mara closed the laptop.
“They studied everyone’s weakness.”
Walter looked at Evan.
“Debt.”
Then at Mara.
“Distance.”
Finally, he looked at Lily.
“Fear.”
Lily nodded.

“Then we stop giving fear the final vote.”
