CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7
A year later, the mansion was gone.
Alejandro sold it to a developer who turned the estate into a medical recovery center funded by the money recovered from Vivian’s stolen accounts.
Elena chose that.
“I want the house to finally help someone,” she said.
They moved into a smaller home by the water in Maine, where mornings smelled like salt, coffee, and pine trees.
Elena still woke from nightmares.
Some days, a dropped glass made her shake.
Some days, silence frightened her more than noise.
Alejandro learned not to rush healing. He learned to ask before touching her. He learned that love after trauma was not about grand speeches, but steady proof.
A hand offered.
A door left open.
A promise kept quietly every day.
One morning, Elena found her wedding ring in a small wooden box on the kitchen table.
The same ring police had recovered from Vivian’s locked drawer.
Alejandro stood across from her, nervous in a way she had not seen since they were young.
“I’m not asking you to go back,” he said. “I’m asking if you want to begin again.”
Elena picked up the ring.
For a long time, she stared at it.
Then she slid it onto her finger.
“I don’t want the life we had,” she said.
Alejandro nodded, eyes wet.
“I want the life we choose now.”
He crossed the kitchen slowly, stopping before he reached her.
Elena smiled through tears and stepped into his arms herself.
That was how he knew.
Not that everything was fixed.
Not that the past had disappeared.
But that Vivian had failed at the one thing she wanted most.
She had stolen three years.
She had stolen peace.
She had stolen a home.
But she had not stolen Elena’s heart.
And she had not stolen the love Alejandro carried across every country, every false lead, every sleepless night, until it finally led him back to the barefoot maid kneeling on his own marble floor.
Only now, Elena was not kneeling.
May you like
She was standing.
And this time, the door was open.
