Chapter 1 - THE BOY BENEATH THE TABLE

“Don’t let that boy near Austin. He’s filthy.”

Madeline Carter stopped inside the marble foyer of her Buckhead mansion, one hand still wrapped around the handle of her suitcase.

Her four-year-old son was crouched beneath the console table.

Liam wore a stained beige shirt and dark pants that hung loosely from his hips. His bare feet were black with dirt. He held a battered construction truck against his chest as if it were the only safe thing in the house.

Madeline’s suitcase crashed onto the marble.

Liam jerked backward and covered his face.

The reaction struck her harder than any scream could have.

On the other side of the foyer, her mother-in-law, Noelle Carter, stood in a pale pink dress with a pearl necklace at her throat. She held a clean, well-fed baby in a white outfit and rocked him protectively.

Jeffrey appeared in the doorway with Cynthia Hale, the executive assistant he had hired shortly before Madeline left for London.

Cynthia’s hand was resting on Jeffrey’s arm.

Jeffrey’s face lost its color.

“Madeline. You weren’t supposed to be home until next month.”

Madeline barely heard him.

She lowered herself to one knee several feet from Liam.

“Sweetheart,” she whispered. “It’s Mommy.”

Liam stared through his fingers.

She extended an open hand.

He recoiled so violently that his shoulder struck the wall.

“Please don’t make me go back.”

Madeline froze.

“Go back where?”

Noelle sighed impatiently. “He’s been difficult for months. We finally found a routine that keeps him from disturbing the baby.”

Madeline looked at the infant in Noelle’s arms.

“Austin is Cynthia’s son,” Jeffrey said. “They needed somewhere to stay.”

Cynthia gave Madeline a small, superior smile.

“It became permanent.”

Madeline’s fingers moved toward her cardigan pocket.

She opened the recording application on her phone without looking down.

Jeffrey stepped farther into the foyer.

“Put that away.”

Madeline raised the phone.

“Say it again.”

“What?”

“The part about keeping my son away from your baby.”

Jeffrey’s jaw tightened. “Don’t twist this. Liam has behavioral issues. He frightens Austin.”

Liam made a soft sound beneath the table.

Madeline shifted her body between him and the others.

Noelle lifted her chin. “You disappeared for two years. We did what was necessary.”

“I called every night.”

“You called when it was convenient for you.”

Jeffrey glanced at Cynthia, then at the glowing phone.

“We’re not having this conversation while you’re recording.”

Madeline reached backward without taking her eyes off him.

For several seconds, Liam did not move.

Then two dirty fingers slipped into her palm.

Madeline closed her hand gently around them.

“Now tell me what you did to my son.”

Noelle’s expression cracked.

Jeffrey looked toward Cynthia in panic.

May you like

And Liam whispered the words none of them expected him to remember.

“Daddy said Mommy chose the company instead of me.”
