Chapter 1 - THE INHALER ON THE COUNTER

Luke held Addie’s blue inhaler above the kitchen counter while my five-year-old daughter fought for air six feet away.

“Give it to me!” I shouted.

He pulled his hand back.

Addie sat rigid on the couch in pink pajamas, her lips tinted blue, each breath scraping through her chest. I had been home from a two-day training in Denver for less than a minute.

Luke leaned against the counter in his gray hoodie as though we were arguing about screen time.

“She needed discipline, not medicine.”

I crossed the room, but he slipped the inhaler behind his back.

Behind me, Addie made a small choking sound.

I turned away from him and dropped beside her.

“Look at me, baby. Mommy’s here.”

Her fingers caught weakly in my sleeve.

“Daddy said I had to stop crying first.”

I called 911 at 6:18 p.m.

While the dispatcher asked questions, Luke told me I was frightening Addie by overreacting. He said she had been whining for me since breakfast. He said she learned that coughing got attention.

I knew then that the inhaler had not been misplaced.

He had used it as leverage.

The ambulance arrived eight minutes later. Jenna, a dark-haired paramedic, knelt beside Addie and fitted an oxygen mask over her face. Her partner, Davis, scanned the room.

His eyes landed on Luke.

He stopped moving.

Luke’s expression changed too.

Davis glanced at the inhaler on the counter, then stepped between Luke and the living room.

“You need to stay where I can see you.”

Luke gave a nervous laugh. “This is my house.”

Jenna called out Addie’s oxygen level. It was dangerously low.

I wrapped both arms around my daughter while Jenna prepared medication.

“You punished a terrified child?” I asked Luke.

He looked away.

Davis guided me toward the hallway, close enough that I could still see Addie.

“Listen carefully,” he said. “Your husband has done this before.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Before Davis could answer, Luke reached for the inhaler.

Davis blocked him.

“Don’t touch it.”

Luke’s face went pale as Davis raised his radio.

Then Addie’s eyes opened behind the oxygen mask.

She lifted one shaking finger toward Luke and whispered, “He locked Ellie outside too.”
