Chapter 6 - EVELYN CHOSE THE AUDIT OVER HER SON
Evelyn requested a meeting.
Caroline nearly refused.
Then Evelyn offered something nobody else had.
Robert’s home office files.
They met at Jonathan’s firm.
Evelyn wore black now.
No blue suit.
No pearls.
She looked smaller without them.
“I didn’t know about the second retainer,” she said immediately.
Caroline waited.
“I knew Austin increased what the company paid Parker Executive Services. He told me Robert wanted me compensated properly after years of unpaid work.”
“Did you invoice?”
“My bookkeeper did.”
“Who gave her the descriptions?”
“Austin’s office.”
Caroline looked at Jonathan.
That distinction could matter.
Evelyn continued.
“I knew some personal hosting costs were mixed in. Robert had always allowed that because many dinners were partly company and partly social.”
“That isn’t a system.”
“I know.”
“Did you know company money paid Austin’s credit card?”
“No.”
“His club?”
“I thought that was company business.”
“The SUV?”
Evelyn looked down.
“I thought that was mine.”
Caroline stared.
“What?”
Austin told her Parker-Hayes had added a widow’s vehicle benefit under Robert’s retirement package.
There was no such benefit.
The lease ran through Evelyn’s company.
Paid with the second retainer.
Austin had created a corporate expense and described it to his mother as something Robert arranged.
The loyalty shift happened quietly.
Evelyn opened her handbag.
Inside were three small notebooks.
Robert’s handwriting.
“He kept these in the bottom drawer.”
Jonathan did not touch them.
“Were they company records?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then we need to preserve them properly.”
Evelyn looked at Caroline.
“Austin told me to burn them.”
The room changed.
“When?”
“The night you were in the hospital.”
Caroline felt every hair on her arms rise.
“He said Dad wrote paranoid things during chemotherapy and no one should use them against the family.”
“Did you read them?”
“Some.”
“What did Robert write?”
Evelyn’s mouth trembled.
“That Austin was using me.”
Caroline said nothing.
Evelyn continued.
“Robert thought the consulting company had become a way to disguise Austin’s compensation and move expenses around board scrutiny.”
“Why didn’t Robert stop him?”
Tears finally came.
“Because he kept saying he would.”
There.
A father protecting a son.
Same old shape.
Different house.
Robert confronted Austin.
Austin promised to correct the allocations.
Robert delayed escalation.
Then his cancer worsened.
The problem continued.
Eventually Robert created the audit trigger.
Evelyn slid the notebooks forward.
“I don’t want to protect him anymore.”
Caroline looked at her.
“Robert?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Austin.”
That distinction mattered.
Later that evening Austin called his mother.
Caroline wasn’t there.
Evelyn recorded nothing.
No convenient secret evidence.
She simply told Jonathan afterward what happened.
Austin accused her of choosing Caroline.
Evelyn answered:
“No. I’m choosing not to lie for you.”
She hung up.
The family alliance that had protected Austin for years had finally cracked.
And the audit had not forced it.
