Chapter 1 - The Child Who Reached for Her

Julian Ward’s hand closed around Clara Bennett’s wrist and drove her against the hospital wall.
“You were too broken to give me a child.”
The words landed harder than her shoulder.
A year had passed since their divorce. Clara had changed apartments, returned to her maiden name, and learned how to move through Columbus without searching every restaurant window for Julian’s face.
She had not expected to find him outside the pediatric wing of Franklin University Medical Center.
He looked prosperous in a navy suit. Beside him stood Sienna Moore, Clara’s former best friend, wearing a lilac dress and holding a one-year-old boy against her hip.
Noah.
Julian’s son.
At least that was how he introduced him.
Sienna shifted the child higher and smiled. “He finally has a real family.”
Clara twisted free from Julian’s grip and steadied herself beside the bench. A baby bottle lay near Sienna’s purse. Noah studied Clara with wide brown eyes.
Then he leaned out of Sienna’s arms and reached for her.
Not a careless wave.
Both arms extended. Fingers opening and closing. A soft, urgent sound rising in his throat.
Julian stepped between them.
“Stop looking at my son.”
Clara’s gaze stayed on Noah. There was a slight cleft in his chin, barely visible when his mouth tightened.
Her father had one exactly like it.
So had Clara before childhood dental surgery softened its appearance.
“Then why does he know me?” she asked quietly.
Sienna’s smile disappeared. She pulled Noah against her chest so quickly that he began to cry.
The elevator opened behind them.
Dr. Samuel Hale stepped into the hallway carrying a sealed medical-record envelope. He had been Clara and Julian’s reproductive endocrinologist during the final two years of their marriage.
He had called Clara that morning and asked her to meet him privately.
He stopped when he saw Noah.
The baby bottle slipped from Sienna’s hand and rolled beneath the bench.
Dr. Hale looked from Sienna to Julian, then back to Clara.
“I was hoping to speak with you before you encountered either of them,” he said.
Julian’s fingers tightened around Clara’s arm again.
She pulled away.
Dr. Hale held out the envelope.
“An internal audit found that one of your frozen embryos was not destroyed as you were told.”
Noah continued reaching toward Clara over Sienna’s shoulder.

Dr. Hale looked at the child.
“The records show it was transferred twenty-one months ago.”
