Chapter 14 - The Choice Domenico Didn't Make for Her

Domenico expected the final confrontation to be about money.

It was not.

Marco came to the house on a Thursday evening with his attorney’s proposed repayment agreement.

He would repay $21,400 immediately from personal savings.

The remainder of the documented amount would be paid over eighteen months.

The coincidence of the term was not lost on anyone.

Anthony’s original loan had also been scheduled over eighteen months.

Miriam had chosen the structure because it fit Marco’s finances, not for symbolism.

Still, Domenico noticed.

So did Gina.

Marco signed his resignation from DeLuca Architectural Millwork.

He returned his office keys.

His company phone.

His fuel card.

His access badge.

Then Domenico slid one final document toward him.

A mutual settlement regarding the documented company losses, subject to final attorney review.

Marco read it.

“What happens if I don’t sign?”

“We pursue what we can prove.”

“And if I do?”

“You repay what we can prove.”

“That’s it?”

Domenico looked at him.

“No. That’s the business part.”

Marco nodded slowly.

He signed.

Then everyone looked at Camilla.

She immediately became angry.

“Why are you all looking at me?”

Gina answered softly.

“Because now you have to decide the part nobody else can decide.”

Camilla stood.

“I’m not deciding tonight.”

Marco looked hurt.

Domenico felt an old instinct rise inside him.

Protect her.

Tell Marco to leave.

Tell Camilla she deserved better.

Turn uncertainty into a clean answer.

He nearly did it.

Then he remembered every adult in the family who had once decided what a child should know for their own good.

He sat back.

“Your marriage is not mine to sentence or save.”

Camilla looked at him.

Marco did too.

Domenico continued.

“You don’t owe me divorce because he stole from my company.”

He looked at Marco.

“And you don’t earn your marriage back because you repay me.”

Marco swallowed.

Camilla’s eyes filled.

That was the choice Domenico had not expected himself to make.

He gave up control.

Not forgiveness.

Not boundaries.

Control.

Camilla turned toward Marco.

“I’m staying at Dad’s for now.”

Marco nodded.

“I figured.”

“I’m meeting with a counselor next week. Alone.”

“Okay.”

“I want you in counseling too.”

Marco hesitated.

Not long.

“Okay.”

“That doesn’t mean we’re reconciling.”

“I know.”

“If you do it just to get me back, don’t.”

Marco looked down at his signed repayment agreement.

“I don’t think getting you back can be the first thing anymore.”

Camilla studied him.

That answer affected her.

Not enough to erase anything.

Enough to make leaving harder.

Marco reached into his pocket and placed his wedding ring on the coffee table.

Camilla stared at it.

“I’m not taking it off because I’m ending this,” he said. “I’m taking it off because I keep using the fact that I’m your husband like it’s evidence that you have to trust me.”

Camilla did not touch the ring.

Neither did anyone else.

Marco picked up his box of company property.

At the door, Domenico stopped him.

Marco looked back.

For a second, everyone expected one final accusation.

Instead Domenico said, “Your father loved you.”

Marco’s face changed.

Domenico continued.

“He also lied to you because he was ashamed. Both things can be true.”

Marco looked toward the opened envelope on the table.

“I wish he’d trusted me with the ugly version.”

Domenico nodded.

“So do I.”

Marco left.

The door closed.

Nobody followed him.

Camilla sat beside the coffee table, looking at the ring he had left behind.

Domenico did not tell her what to do.

That was how he knew something in the family had finally changed.

May you like

Not because the truth had solved everything.

Because for once, nobody was hiding it to control someone else’s choice.
