Chapter 1 - The Name That Stopped Claire Cold

Claire Hayes caught the backpack just as the seven-year-old tried to shove a leg brace inside it.

Bandage rolls spilled across the clinic floor.

“Hey—what are you doing?”

The boy jerked backward so fast his shoulders struck the open medical cabinet.

“Please don’t send me home.”

Claire froze.

It was after seven on a rainy Thursday in Brookline, Massachusetts. The neighborhood clinic had been closed for nearly forty minutes. Claire had stayed late finishing charts when she heard glass bottles rattling in the treatment hallway.

Now a soaked little boy in an expensive navy school blazer stood pressed against a cabinet as though a doctor in scrubs were something to survive.

“I’m not sending you anywhere yet,” Claire said.

His eyes did not soften.

She looked down.

Beneath the cuff of his dark trousers, two wooden kitchen spoons had been taped against his lower leg.

Not medical tape.

Old gray household tape.

The skin around his ankle was swollen.

Claire crouched without touching him.

“Who did this to your leg?”

The boy looked toward the clinic door.

“Grandma said doctors ask too many questions.”

Claire felt something cold move through her.

“What’s your name?”

“Eli.”

“Okay, Eli. I’m Dr. Hayes. I need to look at your leg, but I’ll tell you before I touch anything.”

She reached slowly toward the tape.

Eli threw both arms over his head.

“Don’t hit me! I’ll be good!”

Claire stopped instantly.

“No one is hitting you.”

His breathing came fast.

As one blazer sleeve slid toward his elbow, Claire noticed a strip of faded blue fabric hand-sewn into the inside cuff.

Tiny white stars.

Her fingers went numb.

She knew that fabric.

Twelve years earlier, Claire had spent an entire Saturday in a Cambridge fabric store helping her sister-in-law Rachel choose that exact cotton for a baby blanket.

Rachel had been pregnant.

Michael had complained that every blue looked the same.

Claire had laughed until Rachel threatened to make him sleep on the couch.

Claire touched only the edge of Eli’s sleeve.

“Where did you get this?”

“My dad said my mom made it before she left me.”

Claire’s pulse thudded in her ears.

“What’s your father’s name?”

“Michael Hayes.”

Everything inside Claire stopped.

Michael.

Her younger brother.

The brother she had not spoken to in almost eight years.

Claire looked at the frightened child in front of her.

She had known Michael had a son.

She had never seen him.

Not once.

“What’s your grandma’s name?”

Eli hesitated.

“Diane Hayes.”

Claire closed her eyes for half a second.

Their mother.

When she opened them again, Eli was watching her carefully.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

Claire’s voice broke.

She steadied it.

“No, sweetheart.”

Outside, rain struck the windows harder.

Claire looked at the crude wooden splint.

At the stolen medical supplies.

At the boy who had begged not to be sent home.

Then she looked at Michael’s son.

May you like

Her nephew.

And understood that whatever had separated her from her family eight years ago was no longer something she could afford to leave unquestioned.
