Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Called Theft Sacrifice

Maris agreed to meet Victor and Catherine in the foundation’s empty boardroom.
Her attorney attended. So did Victor’s and Catherine’s lawyers. Brian waited outside as a potential witness.
Maris wore a cream suit and the same pearls from the birthday gala.
“You could have prevented this,” she told Victor.
“By lying?”
“By separating family mistakes from public destruction.”
Catherine placed copies of the ledgers on the table.
“You stole restricted donations.”
“I borrowed money when his company was dying.”
“You continued for twelve years.”
“Because repayment required stability.”
“You framed me.”
Maris looked at her with open contempt.
“You were going to destroy everything over accounting categories.”
“Those categories were meals, transportation, and medical care for real people.”
“I created more good through Victor’s company than those donations ever could.”
Victor leaned forward.
“You let Annie go hungry.”
Maris’s face tightened.
“She was never starving.”
“She ate from the trash.”
“She refused meals to punish me.”
“She was eight.”
“She was Catherine’s daughter.”
The sentence escaped before Maris could reshape it.
Annie had never been merely Victor’s child in Maris’s mind. She was evidence that Catherine had entered the family and could not be fully removed.
Victor asked, “Why forge the letter?”
“Because Catherine would have taken Annie and used her against you.”
“I was her mother,” Catherine said.
“You were a liability.”
Maris’s attorney touched her arm, warning her to stop.
Maris pulled away.
“I spent my entire adult life making sure the Hale men never looked weak. My husband died leaving debts no one knew about. Victor’s company was days from failing. Catherine wanted honesty because she had never been responsible for preserving anything important.”
Catherine’s voice remained quiet.
“You preserved the name by feeding it other people.”
Maris turned toward Victor.
“I made you.”
“No,” he said. “You made sure I never knew what I cost.”
For the first time, her expression cracked.
“What do you want from me?”
“Tell the investigators the truth. Return what can be returned. Stop calling Annie a liar.”
“And if I do?”
“You still don’t see her unless her therapist and Catherine agree it is safe.”
Maris stared at him.
“You would keep my granddaughter from me?”
May you like
Victor looked at Catherine before answering.
“No. I’m finally admitting she was never mine to hand over.”
