Chapter 4 - THE RECORDING THEY COULD NOT BURY

Brooke was found the following morning at a bus station outside Knoxville.

She had not run away.

A Sterling security guard had driven her across the state line and taken her phone. Brooke escaped when he stopped for gas and called 911 from inside a convenience store.

Tennessee authorities placed her in protective custody.

The cracked purple tablet was hidden inside the lining of her backpack.

Brooke had taken it from Jaxson’s truck after the assault.

Its recordings changed the case.

Lily’s first audio file captured Miranda, Charles, Evelyn, and Judge Denning discussing the upcoming custody hearing.

Charles promised the judge financial support for his reelection campaign.

Miranda rehearsed a statement claiming Marcus frightened Lily during video calls.

The second recording was worse.

Charles told Rowan and Jaxson to recover the tablet.

Miranda’s voice came next.

“Scare her if you have to. Just don’t let her call Marcus.”

At the end of the file, Evelyn laughed.

“She’ll learn what the Sterling name means.”

The SBI moved quickly.

Judge Denning was removed from the custody case. A state judge from another district scheduled a new emergency hearing.

Charles tried to stop it.

He sent Sheriff Landry to the hospital with two deputies and an order transferring Lily into Miranda’s custody.

Dr. Archer blocked the doorway.

“This patient is not medically cleared.”

Landry held up the document. “Step aside, Doctor.”

Marcus came from the far end of the hall, calm and empty-handed.

Miranda followed behind the sheriff.

“Lily needs to come home,” she said.

Marcus looked at her. “Home is where she was nearly killed.”

Landry reached for Marcus’s arm.

Before he could touch him, three SBI agents stepped from the elevator.

The lead agent displayed a warrant.

“Sheriff Landry, remove your hand from Sergeant Vance.”

Landry’s face drained.

Miranda backed toward the wall.

Charles appeared behind her with his attorneys and security men, still behaving as if money could rearrange the hallway.

“This is harassment,” he said.

Marcus took out his phone.

Lily had asked him to play the driveway video in front of them.

He held the screen toward Miranda and Charles. The image remained blurred from where Lily lay, but the audio was clear.

Lily’s voice cried for her mother.

On the recording, Miranda’s bedroom window slammed shut.

Miranda whispered, “Turn it off.”

Marcus did not.

Rowan demanded the tablet password.

Jaxson threatened Brooke.

Then Charles’s voice came through a phone on speaker.

“Do what you have to do. That recording cannot leave the property.”

Charles stared at Marcus.

“Where did you get that?”

Marcus looked past him toward Brooke, who had entered the hallway beside a child-services advocate.

“From your own blood.”

Brooke stepped forward, pale but steady.

“You told everyone I was unstable,” she said to her father. “You told Grandma I made things up for attention.”

Jaxson was not there to answer. He and Rowan had been arrested before dawn.

Charles’s confidence finally broke.

He turned toward the security men.

Neither moved.

The SBI agent placed Charles under arrest on charges tied to witness intimidation, conspiracy, bribery, and the assault investigation.

Evelyn was arrested at the estate.

Sheriff Landry was taken into custody in the same hospital hallway where he had intended to remove Lily.

Miranda sank into a chair.

She looked at Marcus as if he were the only person who could still save her.

“I’m her mother.”

Marcus’s voice remained low.

“You had the chance to be.”
