Chapter 5 - THE MAN ISABELLA MARRIED TO PUNISH

Gabriel Vale had not been arrested because Vittorio betrayed him.
Alessio had.
Six years earlier, Gabriel planned to attack a competing crew during a charity dinner at a waterfront hotel. Alessio learned that families and hotel employees would be inside.
He gave a federal prosecutor the address of Gabriel’s private meeting.
The agents arrested Gabriel before the attack. No one at the charity dinner was harmed.
Alessio never testified publicly. The tip was buried inside a larger investigation. Vittorio discovered what he had done and allowed the family to blame him because Alessio’s wife was pregnant and their father would have killed his younger son for cooperating.
“Isabella found an altered copy of the case file,” Alessio said. “It made it look like the information came from you.”
“Who altered it?”
“Marco.”
Three earlier details shifted into place at once.
Marco had introduced Isabella to Vittorio after Gabriel’s death.
Marco had encouraged every conversation about Palermo and old alliances.
Marco had been present when Isabella asked which brother controlled the freight routes.
He had not merely seduced Vittorio’s wife.
He had built her grief into a weapon.
“She married me to get close enough to destroy me,” Vittorio said.
“Maybe at first.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I saw her with you before Marco came back. She wasn’t pretending every day for five years.”
Vittorio wanted to reject that possibility. Hatred was cleaner.
Alessio placed a second phone on the counter. “Isabella called me twenty minutes ago.”
Vittorio stared at it.
“She thinks I’m helping Marco,” Alessio said. “Marco told her I arranged your disappearance so she could inherit the legitimate company.”
“And she believed him?”
“She believes whatever keeps Gabriel’s death from being meaningless.”
The phone rang again.
Alessio answered on speaker.
Isabella’s breathing came first.
Then Marco said, “Warehouse 14. Both brothers. No crews. You have thirty minutes if you want the gardener alive.”
A muffled voice protested in the background.
Renzo.
Vittorio reached for the phone, but Alessio covered it with his hand.
“If we go there with your men, Marco kills him.”
“If we don’t, he kills him later.”
“There’s another choice.”
Alessio opened a folder containing freight records, shell-company ledgers and correspondence with a federal organized-crime prosecutor.
He had been preparing to dismantle the Morelli organization from inside.
Vittorio understood what his brother was asking.
Not just to rescue Renzo.
To surrender the empire that had made the trap possible.
“If I sign this,” Vittorio said, “they take everything.”
“They take what was built through fear.”
“Hundreds of employees depend on the company.”
“The legitimate operation can survive under a court-appointed monitor. But only if we provide the records before Marco destroys them.”
Vittorio looked toward the hallway where Isabella’s portrait hung beneath the staircase.
He had spent his adult life believing control was the same thing as safety.
Sophia had hidden him behind a tree because everyone around him knew otherwise.

He signed the authorization.
Then he took Renzo’s cracked phone and drove toward the marina with his brother.
