Chapter 9 - WHEN THE FAMILY PICKED SIDES

Luke’s parents arrived from Pennsylvania for the temporary-custody hearing.

His mother, Diane Bennett, sat beside him.

Hannah had once loved her.

Diane had thrown the baby shower.

Bought Ava’s crib.

Stayed for a week after the birth and filled Hannah’s freezer with casseroles.

Now she would barely look at her.

In the courthouse hallway, Diane finally approached.

“How could you put her in a suitcase?”

Hannah did not defend herself.

“I shouldn’t have.”

Diane looked almost startled.

Hannah continued.

“But ask Luke why I thought hiding Ava for thirty seconds was safer than letting him see where she was.”

Diane’s face tightened.

“My son would never hurt that baby.”

“I didn’t say he would.”

“Then what are you accusing him of?”

Hannah looked toward Luke.

“Making sure I couldn’t leave with her.”

Luke heard.

He crossed the hallway.

“This is what she does.”

His voice was controlled enough for everyone nearby to hear.

“She creates chaos and then blames whoever cleans it up.”

Hannah’s attorney stepped closer.

“Luke.”

But Luke continued.

“You abandoned our daughter in luggage.”

Several relatives were watching now.

So were two lawyers and a court clerk.

Hannah felt the old instinct rise.

Defend.

Explain.

Prove.

Then she saw Nadine near the elevators.

Her mother had arrived to testify.

Luke noticed her too.

“Tell them.”

Nadine froze.

He pointed toward Hannah.

“Tell them she wasn’t thinking clearly.”

For years, Nadine had supplied exactly that kind of sentence.

Hannah waited.

Diane waited.

Luke waited.

Nadine walked forward.

“Hannah told me she was afraid of you.”

Luke’s face changed.

Nadine continued.

“She told me for months.”

“Mom,” Hannah whispered.

Nadine did not look at her.

“And I decided a good job and a nice house meant she must be exaggerating.”

Luke laughed sharply.

“You called me.”

“Yes.”

“Because you knew she was unstable.”

“No.”

Nadine’s voice broke.

“I called you because I was afraid she was making a mistake.”

She finally looked at Hannah.

“I was wrong about whose mistake it was.”

Luke stepped closer.

“You helped her hide my child.”

“I helped your wife try to leave.”

“You staged that suitcase.”

“Yes.”

A court security officer glanced over.

Luke lowered his voice.

“You’re destroying this family.”

Nadine shook her head.

“No.”

Then she said the thing Hannah had waited years to hear.

“You taught me to call control responsibility.”

Luke’s expression hardened.

The temporary hearing did not resolve everything that day.

Courts rarely did.

But Luke’s emergency request for immediate sole custody was denied.

Ava remained in temporary foster placement while DCF completed its plan.

Both parents received structured supervised access.

The protection-order hearing was scheduled separately.

As they left, Hannah’s attorney stopped her.

“There’s something else.”

Hannah looked over.

“What?”

“Grant found the woman who saw you with Luke in the garage.”

Hannah’s breath caught.

“The commuter?”

Her attorney nodded.

“She remembers what he said.”

Hannah closed her eyes.

May you like

Not because the case was suddenly won.

Because for the first time, somebody outside her family had heard what happened.
