At sixteen, I hit the dining-room floor after my stepmother Margot jerked my chair backward because I refused to transfer my college fund to her son. I could no longer feel my right leg. Dad reached for 911, but Margot seized his wrist, confiscated the phone, and said, “Carry her yourself—or she stays there until dessert.” Forty-three minutes later, a dark bruise covered my lower back while Margot told urgent care I had twisted my ankle. The nurse tested my foot, triggered the trauma alarm, and demanded to know why they had moved a suspected spinal injury. Margot’s pen stopped over the false intake form. Dad looked at her and whispered, “Tell them what you did to the chair.”
I was rushing to an emergency company meeting when a homeless old woman grabbed my sleeve. “Please… I haven’t eaten in two days.” Furious, I kicked her away. She crashed onto the pavement, and a worn silver necklace flew from beneath her coat. My breath stopped. I had given that necklace to my mother before she vanished fifteen years ago. “Mom…?” I whispered. She opened her eyes and said, “Your father made sure you’d never find me.” That meeting could wait. My revenge had just begun.
When I was seven months pregnant, they forced me to cook the entire Christmas dinner alone. My mother-in-law even made me eat standing up in the kitchen, saying it was “good for the baby.” When I tried to sit down, she pushed me so hard I began to lose my child. I tried to grab my phone to call the police, but my husband snatched it away and mocked me: “I’m a lawyer. You aren’t going to win.” I looked him straight in the eyes and said calmly: “Then call my father.”
